Patanjali Yoga Sutra: Day 03

DAY 03: SAMADHI

  1. Dispassion does not divide you rather this connects you to the divine. Mind is divided when you are in past or in future because you are not 100% in current moment.
  2. Dispassion doesn't take away pleasure from you, it gives you pleasures that no one can give you.
  3. Dispassion is not escaping from things, it is more deep and refine. It is full of passion, contentment, compassion and love.
  4. Dispassion is the strengthening. It strengthens you. It is not arrogance, it is being centered.
  5. Everyone has come to world to GIVE; you can't take anything from this world.
  6. What is the purpose of sadhana? Samadhi is total equanimity of mind.
  7. Four types of Samadhi (four states of consciousness; states when you are in elevated states of consciousness). All these four are called 'Sampragayta':
    • Vitarka: When mind is in a special logic. A logic that can not be reverted and is beyond contempt. It is irreversible and irrefutable. 'Every thing is changing and bound to be changed' - this is vitarka.
Tarka is refutable and science on Tarka.
    • Vichara: In vichara there are all sort of experience keep coming when we meditate. Just keep observing with it. Step back and witness with full awareness.
Usually there are two thoughts that come to our mind
    • Thoughts that disturbs you
    • Thoughts that hover over but don't disturb you
    • Aananda anugama: A meditative state in which you are in complete ecstasy
    • Ashmita anugama: Don't know anything. You know you are but don't know who you are, where you are. Just 'I am'.
  8. Now how to achieve these:
  9. You can not get any of this with any sort of efforts. This has to be effortless.
    • You have to practice to rest. A rest that is uninterrupted, unforced rest (sleep in forced rest). Consciously resting with awareness on your own.
    • For some it comes with old 'sanskaras'. Some old impressions of life.
  10. Samadhi is not the experience of this world only. This can be led to subtle bodies in other levels of creations as well. It can affect people who have lived 100 years back or who will live in future. Life is infinite.
  11. Different types of yogis (and hence the different ways in which Samadhi can happens):
  12. These are the experiences when you achieve equanimity of consciousness.
    • Videha: Those who don't seem to have body. Completely non aware of body. Knowing that 'this is my body but I am not body'.
    • Prakrtilaya: Those who are completely submerged in the nature. Completely non aware of objects of body.
    • Shradha: Faith creates such a quality in your consciousness - it makes consciousness extremely stable and steady. It brings integrity in you. It consolidates you. It gives you amazing strength. And when there is faith, Samadhi happens.
Faith is a sign of strength and doubt is a sign of weakness. Doubt scatters you and disseminates you.
    • Veerya (valour / vigor): the defense comes to its peak, it gives you equanimity there.
    • Smriti: The very memory of a meditative state, that will make you relive it. Memory of peace, surrender, love will bring you back to the self. Remember the beautiful moments you had.
    • Pragya: It is the result of Samadhi. Equanimity gives way to that heightened awareness.
  13. When you give first preference to your sadhana then the growth will be even faster. Then every thing will follow; revolve around it. Now this 'preferences giving' can also be of three types:
    • Slow: let me do it
    • Medium: I want to do it
    • Fast: Can't be without doing it
  14. Just by devotion to GOD (one pointed devotion) you attain samadhi.
