Narada Bhakti Sutras - Day 4 (Part 1)

Love Is Pure Communication

  1. The respect that you have for someone that is above your level is different from the love that you have for someone that is at your level. Love flows in that direction that is friendliness, companionship; there should be some level ground.
  2. It is easy to respect somebody and it is easy to look down upon somebody but to have love on equal basis is difficult because either you find faults in them and put them down or you put them high and think that you can not reach them and your communication breaks down whenever you oscillate between lower and higher levels.
  3. There are three levels:
    • Attraction (at physical level; that's how lust generates)
    • Whatever you are attracted to, if it becomes a little hard to get then love develops because then attraction seeps deep into your heart and heart starts longing for it, waiting for it, desiring for it and then love has happened
    • If that love is kept again with certain distance, then love turns and love does not destroys the respect
  4. Respect needs some distance and love can not stand distance. The conflict of nature between love and respect is a problem in most of the relationship in the world today. Why relationships happen, why they break - the cause is in the intrinsic conflict in the nature of things the way they are. That's where a sutra is needed that unites and uplifts.
  5. When the love culminates it becomes surrender.
  6. In love there is 2% lust and in lust there is only 2% love.  Lust means - coming close, being together.
  7. Spirit is male and the divine earth is female that receives the spirit.
  8. Some differences between love and lust:
    • Lust is aggressive, love is submissive
    • Lust is feverishness - wanting something, wanting to possess, love is giving, caring, being available for the need
    • In lust thee is feverishness, in love there is spark and joy
    • A person lustfully makes you object of their joy, in love you elevate a person to godliness
    • Lust is stimulation of body, love is stimulation of soul, of the heart
    • If the love is only lust (its only at physical level), there is no expression or wish to give pleasure or comfort to other. The nature of lust is such that it is not wanting to give comfort to others. But love rejoices in the joy of others; when lover is joyful other lover feels joyful
    • Then nature of love is to give comfort, joy, happiness to the lover; lust is extracting joy from others, finding comfort from others.

  9. Both lust and love are related very closely and this discrimination is missing in society. People think that lust is bad; neither putting something down, nor getting stuck is the way to grow.
  10. One moment of samadhi is equivalent to the joy of 1000 times sex in a moment.
  11. There is a taboo in the East to express love; people love each other but they won't tell it. Where as in the West there is too much expression. Too much expression of love -somewhere feelings die off, it doesn't take deep roots; too much suppression of love - it stifles the love. So some middle path should be taken - neither too much expression nor too much suppression.
